One of the tips given in the wonderful book "The Pragmatic Programmer" is to continually increase your knowledge portfolio. One specific example given is to learn a new programming language every year.
One intrepid group of programmers has decided to organize a group to implement that wisdom. The "Language of the Year" Project is learning Haskell in 2002.
