A cool "variations on a theme" project. Kind of like Metafont, but seems more ambitious.
This is related to language in so many levels, I am not going to try and list them...
Douglas Hofstadter fans are sure to love this.

I'd say less ambitious in that it doesn't want to try and generate whole fonts with a common theme :) Also interesting is Letter Spirit (http://www.cogsci.indiana.edu/farg/mcgrawg/lspirit.html) though I don't know if much work is being done on it not at the moment. This was conceived by Douglas R. Hofstadter, who saw the recognition and generation of letters in different fonts is an interesting AI domain. He talks about Metafont in his book "Metamagical Themas : Questing for the Essence of Mind and Pattern" . After all, humans can recognize a lower case a in many different fonts, and can recognize that two letters are from the same or different fonts. How is this done, where does the "A spirit" or the "Helvetica spirit" live?
