Paul Snively seems to be the center of some interesting conversations about programming languages spread between several weblogs. Just read his weblog entries from the last couple of days. Or read David McCusker's weblog (always a good idea).
By the way, I am teaching from EOPL2 and I highly recommend it as a textbook. For self study, I'd prefer the first edition of EOPL. LiSP is also a very good book. I highly recommend both.
