While on the topic of virtual machines, take a look at this paper. It discusses work on a JIT translator that is both fast and small. The runtime (including the JIT translation) is said to be about 2x the runtime of compiled code. The translator can fit in an 8K cache.
The C translator/code generator is based on pattern-matching, and is produced from the grammer by an Icon program.
