Where is everybody? |
It has been awfully quiet around here the last couple of days. What's up?
By the way, when you do decide to post remember that some departments are in more need of attention than others. For example: fun (last entry 3/9/02), critiques (5/6/02, but general lack of entries) and Logic/Declerative (ditto).
We also need more theory, interesting stuff on semantics etc.

I'm not posting this to the recent Paul Graham / Lisp thread, since it isn't relevant to that topic, but instead about the responses to it. A lot of people that you apparently want to attract aren't finding this website and the majority of its readers very receptive to what they're working on. Also for a website entitled "Lambda", there's a ridiculous lack of knowledge of Common Lisp and the applications written in it, which is primarily what Paul Graham works in and talks about.
I know it's easy to construe what I just said as flame bait, but you have to consider that all of those areas you just mentioned include things that I am very interested in, and would love to post on. However, I honestly have come to the conclusion that no one cares enough to learn about these systems, and that whatever comments we do see as a result will be genuinely ignorant.
I'm sure this will receive a very negative response, but I've been dissappointed often enough here not to care to respond.

I am not sure what makes you feel this way. I don't think it is true. Maybe we can continue this discussion via email, since I really want to find out what dissappointed you.
I remind everyone that LtU is not comp.lang.misc. Every once in awhile we have a flame-oriented thread, but most of the time we are much more focused on informative theoretical posts or posts about the state of the art in language use.

Water, I and many others who regularly visit this website are very interested in the above topics. If there isn't much discussion I believe it's because 1) most of us aren't experts, but interested hobbyists so the material may be new to us (it often is to me!) and 2) there often isn't much to say other than 'hmm...interesting.'
The recent flaming about Paul Graham is very unusual. We've had discussions about similar topics (they get a lot of discussion as every programmer has a POV about programming practice) has been quite civil.

And indeed programming pracvtice in general is not on topic here. We want more informed opinion from language mavens. I for one am always eager to learn more.
