What is Universal about the Representation of Color Experience?

A study in the importance of language. We've had posts before that discuss whether and how language shapes experience, but I don't think this paper has appeared.

Only vaguely related to programming, I know, but there is a tradition here for this kind of thing (I hope!). From painquale on mefi.

Synaesthesia?

The word I most expected to see in that paper wasn't there. Synaesthesia

Particularly interesting is the implication that there is some level of synaesthesia in the general population. This could give rise to some very curious UI design issues.

I am not aware of having such an, umm, feature in my brain beyond a vague feeling of timbre associated with the different programming languages.

Sapir-Whorf hypothesis

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis states that there is a systematic relationship between the grammatical categories of the language a person speaks and how that person both understands the world and behaves in it.

Sorry, I am reasonably new here. Using the search box on 'sapir-whorf' yielded no results, and I didn't feel like manually examining the whole archive.

Also, it would be nice for newcomers like me if people posted links to the old threads when they continue on them.
