Site Discussion

width still fixed?

hi,

Thanks for a still tremendous site!

Any chance of having the text of things be HTML w/out fixed widths? I am finding that even on a real, large display, things are chopped off the RHS and I have to scroll to-and-fro to read anything. I don't think any of my Firefox settings are causing this, I have tried dis/enabling things to experiment, with no useful results.

Maybe it is something about that particular page since others don't seem to have the problem. Hm...

[Firefox 1.5.0.6 on WinXP Pro.]

Escape sequence for XML

Are there escape codes to allow the display of XML such as this: " some text ". Of course the attribute mark-up is missing!
Edit:
<attribute> incredible! </attribute>

Community enforcement discussion

Since discussions about the appropriateness of policy enforcement have already arisen, I'd like to suggest that in future, such comments be posted to this thread, or as appropriate, to another thread in this forum (i.e. the Site Operation Discussions forum).

Topics and comments posted in this forum won't appear on the RSS feeds of those who have chosen only to subscribe to the home page or the main discussion forum. The earlier LtU: Policies Document topic was posted to the home page, and its discussion was getting long.

Site error relating to "cache.myi"

Not sure if your aware of it or if it happens to anyone else, but I'm getting the following error:

user error: Can't open file: 'cache.MYI'. (errno: 145)
query: SELECT data, created, headers FROM cache WHERE cid = 'menu:1642:en' in /home/vhost/ltu/www/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 66.

There's another error related to the cache but it's a huge single line error. It doesn't stop functionality of the site tho (that i can tell).

Email/news interface

Ok, Lambda has gotten very active of late and it's getting to be a pain to keep up via the web interface. Is there any hope of getting an email or Usenet like interface for LtU, as eloquently described by Matt Hellige?

If it involves modifying Drupal source or adding a Drupal module, I'd be happy to volunteer.

Javascript department

re the ongoing poll...

Personally, I don't like departments limited to a single language, unless I feel some serious language innovation is taking place, or some seriously cool hacking.

Application specific scripting languages belong to the DSL department. Internet applications usually go in the XML department (which was never restricted just to XML).

I don't want a scripting department (I don't really like the term "scripting languages").

But JS may warrant a department even after considering these reservations. Opinions?

"New story" template

How easy it is (and whether it makes sence) to pre-fill the body of the newly created story with a template mentioned by Ehud?
That will make it easier to present stories in the same format.
I mean the text of the template can literally contain recommendations - like, describe the main point here, quote here, but no more than 200 words, provide links here, list authors here, etc. and HTML formatting, too.

Editing posts

I don't think you should be allowed to edit your own post, with the possible exception that you can append to it, for example to correct a link.

I've seen two examples now in the past week where people have edited posts to substantially change what they say, instead of fixing minor typos. This really isn't good from a discussion point of view.

I don't agree with all Slashdot decisions, but I do with this one. Here's what they say about the issue in their FAQ:

Will you delete my comment?

No. We believe that discussions in Slashdot are like discussions in real life- you can't change what you say, you only can attempt to clarify by saying more. In other words, you can't delete a comment that you've posted, you only can post a reply to yourself and attempt to clarify what you've said.

In short, you should think twice before you click that 'Submit' button because once you click it, we aren't going to let you Undo it.

Max messages per page?

I don't know if it's just me or whether there was an upper limit put on the number of messages being cranked out per page? When I click on a response I get two problems: First, only 10 messages from the very top of the thread are displaying - albeit with a next page button at the bottom. Second, the link doesn't go to the message I click on unless it happens to be in one of the first 10.

The content of this field is private and only visible to yourself

Why do fields like Interests and Biography say they are private and only visible to yourself? What is the point of these fields if they are not public? I know my own biography, why do I need to cache a private version of it on LtU?
